... Ali Paşa Covered Bazaar It was built
by Mimar Sinan in 1569 by order of Semiz Ali Paşa, another Grand Vizier
of Kanuni Sultan Süleyman. It has 6 gates and 130 shops. It experienced
its most glorious period in the 17th century.
Selimiye Shopping Center (Arasta) This arasta was designed by the architect Davut Ağa by order of Murat III in order to bring in revenue for Selimiye Mosque. It is 255 m long with 73 arches and has 124 shops. The traveller, Evliya Çelebi, wrote that the name of the shopping center was "Kavaflar Çarşısı" (Bargain Bazaar). The shopkeepers here pray and promise each day under the prayer dome that they will do business honestly. Bedesten (Covered Market) It was built in 1417-1418 by Çelebi Mehmet as a religious foundation for the Old Mosque. It has 14 domes made of lead and an ornamental wall covered with two colours of hewn stone. The building's dimensions are 40.54 m by 74.94 m. there are doors on all four sides and lancet windows under each dome. Inside, the long sides have 14 vaulted cells each, and the short sides have 4 cells each. Evliya Çelebi wrote that the diamonds and jewelry in the bedesten were worth several times the treasure of Egypt and were guarded each night by sixty watchmen. The market was repaired in recent years and is being used as a bazaar |
